Event Description:
Mindfulness as an Emotional Regulation Strategy
Many people come to mindfulness seeking relief from stress, pain, or emotional overwhelm — only to find that simply “watching the mind” isn’t always enough. This weekend retreat offers a restorative and practical approach to mindfulness as an emotional regulation strategy, drawing on both contemplative wisdom and evidence-based, trauma-sensitive practices.
Grounded in Buddhist approaches to mindfulness practice, secular Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), Breathworks Mindfulness for Pain courses, and mindfulness-based coaching, the retreat emphasizes interoceptive awareness — learning to sense, feel, and befriend our inner experience. Rather than bypassing difficulty, we explore how feeling — when done with care, choice, and support — can be stabilizing, restorative, and healing.
Through guided meditation, gentle movement, short teachings, inquiry, and periods of silence, participants will explore:
How emotions show up in the body and nervous system
Ways mindfulness supports regulation rather than suppression
Practical tools for working with stress, anxiety, and pain
Cultivating inner safety, steadiness, and self-compassion
Applying mindfulness skillfully in daily life, caregiving, and work
This retreat is suitable both for newcomers to mindfulness and for experienced practitioners who want a more embodied, relational, and sustainable approach. It may be especially supportive for caregivers, healthcare professionals, and those navigating illness, grief, or ongoing stress.
This retreat is residential and meals/housing are included in the price. Please see the note below about donations for teachers. You can access helpful information about attending retreats at Aryaloka here.
About the Leader:
Padmadharini is an ordained Buddhist, Board Certified Chaplain, and ICF-certified professional coach, with nine years of experience working in a large hospital network as a staff wellbeing leader. She has accompanied countless individuals and teams through health crises, chronic stress, moral distress, and periods of profound transition.
Her teaching integrates Buddhist psychology with contemporary understandings of trauma, the nervous system, and mindfulness-based emotion regulation. Her approach is compassionate, trauma-sensitive, and grounded in real-world application—inviting participants to move at their own pace, listen deeply to the body, and discover mindfulness as a source of resilience and care.
A Culture of Generosity and Support
In the tradition of passing on the Dharma freely, our Dharma retreat and workshop facilitators offer their work without charge and are not paid. We recognize the value in what they do and want to thank them for their time, energy, and wisdom. A financial gift can help support our facilitators to afford them the opportunity to lead. Please consider making a donation towards their support. There is often a cash collection and a thank you card that is passed on the retreat, though one can also make a donation directly to facilitators with a check, and some use money transfer services such as PayPal or Venmo. Thank you for your generosity.
