Tales of Freedom: Stories of Courageous Love from the Buddhist Tradition (Online Course)

Led By: Ananta, Moira, Mark, and Todd
Tuesday Evenings
6:30 p.m. to 8:15 p.m. EDT
May 9th - May 30th, 2023

Online via Zoom

Course Description:

A Zen monk strides empty-handed into a tiger’s cage. An Indian master spontaneously empties a bag of gold dust into the air. A young woman lays down the burden of her dead child and asks the Buddha to accept her as his disciple.

These are some of the scenes evoked in the book Tales of Freedom by Vessantara. Drawing from the rich variety of the Buddhist tradition, the stories convey a sense of inner freedom.

We will explore one story each week, through discussion and reflection, of how ordinary people liberate themselves from anger and grief, and great teachers remain free even in the face of death.

Zoom link will be provided after registration is received.

Agenda:

Each week, we’ll begin with a brief meditation, followed by a check-in. The week’s leader will discuss the material. A second small-group discussion will take place, followed by reconvening with the entire class. If time permits, class will end with a short closing meditation.

About the Leaders:

Ananta is a British-born global strategist and change-maker in child and youth rights. He is the CEO of Karuna USA, an international nonprofit tackling poverty and discrimination in South Asia and the USA, and formerly led global youth empowerment initiatives with the United Nations. He is a certified Mindfulness teacher by Brown University, an ordained Buddhist, and has practiced meditation for twenty-five years.

Moira is a longtime meditator, yogini, and practitioner in the Triratna Buddhist Community. She has led and co-led many retreats and workshops on compassion and the Buddhist path. Moira is particularly interested in building compassionate communities and helping to translate ancient practices in a way that is meaningful and accessible to anyone interested.

Mark is a long-time student of Buddhism, meditator, and professor of photography. Mark has been a member of the Triratna Buddhist Community for many years and recently received an invitation to become ordained and join the Order.
