The Bodhisattva path in a time of ecological crisis

Event Description:
Following the success of June’s How to Be a Buddhist Activist event, the sixth annual Triratna Earth Sangha online conference, climate café and puja
How do we respond to a world in ecological crisis with love rather than despair?
We are living through a profound ecological emergency. Climate change, biodiversity loss, and the destruction of ecosystems are already causing immense suffering, while global temperatures continue to rise. The 1.5°C threshold is likely to be crossed within the next few years, bringing increasingly dangerous risks and impacts. And yet the future is not fixed. There is still much we can do to limit warming, protect the natural world and create more compassionate and sustainable ways of living.
As Buddhists, this raises questions that are both practical and deeply spiritual.
What does it mean to care for the Earth as a practice of love? What might the Bodhisattva ideal look like in a time of climate and ecological breakdown? And how can we cultivate the courage, wisdom, and compassion needed to meet the suffering of our world without turning away?
This year’s Triratna Earth Sangha conference brings people together to explore these questions.
Across the weekend there will be inspiring talks, workshops, guided meditations, pujas, music, poetry, and visual arts, creating space not only to learn and reflect, but also to connect with others who care deeply about the future of our planet.
We will hear from communities on the frontline of ecological and climate breakdown, explore the ways Buddhists are responding to the crisis, and discover practical and spiritual approaches to living with greater simplicity, awareness, and care. We will also showcase the work of the Triratna Earth Sangha and the growing network of people within Triratna who are seeking to bring Buddhist values into relationship with the ecological challenges of our time.
You don’t need to be an environmental activist or an expert on climate change to take part. If you love the natural world, feel concerned about what is happening to our planet, wonder how Buddhist practice can respond, or simply want to explore how we might live more lightly and compassionately, you are warmly invited.
Perhaps, in the face of such a vast crisis, one of the most important questions is not simply “What can I do?” but “How can I keep my heart open?”
Come and explore this with us.
